Finding a Nursing Home for Someone You Love
I just returned from Big Bear to Oahu, Hawaii check out some real estate over thereand I wanted to discuss something that was rather near and dear to my heart. Finding a good nursing home for a loved one can seem like a daunting task at first. But once you get started, though, you’ll quickly learn what to look for.
Begin by identifying all the nursing homes in question that are in the best location for the family and friends to visit. If the loved one will need financial assistance from Medicaid and/or Medicare, you can use that criterion to shorten the list. Here in Big Bear, California, for example, it does not seem like there are so many, perhaps because Big Bear real estate is a bit high right now, as is the island of Oahu.
Federal law requires that each nursing home facility must post state survey inspection reports and to make them available. Also, visit Medicare dot gov if you are so inclined. I can suggest this senior communities and assisted living facility which includes Alzheimers care and other elderly care options as well. They are one of the better nursing homes in the Pheonix, Arizona area I believe, better than Big Bear or Oahu I think.
There will be many people that will be in a position to tell you about a particular home. Others who have a friend or family member in the home, doctors who have experience with it, nurses, physical therapists, or employees who actually work there, as well as social workers, ministers, a long term care Ombudsman, are also some possible sources to obtain information from. All in all when I was in Oahu I think it was much the same situation as in Big Bear since the price of Oahu Real estate
was very high and this in turn meant that there were not as many such homes there.
There is nothing like a visit to provide a first-hand impression. Do the resident/patients seem happy? Does the staff seem attentive to their needs? How does the facility smell? Does it apper to be clean and well-maintained?
Does the home have good, clean equipment that is well-maintained, such as wheelchairs?
What is the food like? Do the patients enjoy and look forward to it?
